Official Pinewood Derby Rules

Up to six cars from each Pack will be accepted.  Cars will compete in one of two divisions, Cubs (including Tigers) and Webelos.  To speed registration, we recommend that all cars be delivered to the check-in point as a group and registered together.  Most Packs confiscate the winning cars to insure that the cars are not broken or misplaced between the Pack race and the District race.

The cost of registration will be $3.00 per car to cover the costs of the race.

District Rules

1)  All pinewood derby cars, regardless of individual pack rules, must conform to these specifications in order to participate in the District Championship race.

2)  Once cars are registered they will be off limits to everyone except race officials until the race has been completed.

3)  Official Car Kits - Only official pinewood derby kits as sold at the Sioux Council Service Center or authorized scout supply outlets shall be used.

4)  Overall Width – Shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

5)  Overall Length – Shall not exceed 7 inches.

6)  Weight – Shall not exceed 5 ounces.  No loose materials are permitted.  Any weights used for adjustment must be securely fastened to the car.  At the Scout-O-Rama derby each car will be inspected and weighed.  If weight adjustments are necessary you will be allowed a maximum of 3 reweighs.  If after the third reweigh the car still exceeds the weight limit it will not be allowed to participate.  An alternate may be substituted.  If after the third reweigh, the car is under the weight limit it will participate at whatever it then weighs.  NO additional reweighs will be granted.  Washers may be used for weights, but cannot be affixed to the wheel, axle or in the area of the axle groove.

7)  Clearance – (Distance between car and track)  Shall be at least 3/8 inch. Weights and other decorations hanging lower than 3/8 inch may scrape along the track surface.

8)  Wheel Alterations – Wheels cannot be altered in shape, size or width.

9)  Wheel Base – (Distance from front to rear axle) Distance shall not be more than or less than 4 ¼ inches (+/- 1/8”).  The original car kit comes with this spacing.  The car body should extend forward of the front wheels to prevent damage to wheels and axles during the race.

10)  Wheel Tread – (Distance between wheels on the same axle) Distance must be a minimum of  1 ¾ inches.  Wheels too close together may cause the car to improperly straddle the track guide.  Original car kit comes with this spacing.

11)  Lubricants – Only dry lubricant is permitted.  Please apply lubricants prior to registration.

12)  Once cars are registered they will be off limits to everyone except race officials until the race has been completed.

13)  Bearings / bushings – Absolutely NOT permitted anywhere on the body, axle or wheels.

14)  Springs – Absolutely NOT permitted.

Race Logistics

The race will begin at 1:00 PM.  Please have all cars registered before that time.  We will race the Cub Scout division first, followed by the Webelos division.

The cars will be raced on an aluminum track.   The finish line will be placed at the official distance of 38 feet.  We will have an electronic finish line marking the end of the race.

Finish order will be displayed on the electronic finish line tower.  Finish order will not determine the overall placement of cars.

Cars will be placed according to fastest average time.  Sensors at the official finish line will record the time each car takes to complete the race.  Each car will race on each lane of the track.  Differences in individual lanes will be compensated for by requiring every car to race on every lane.

Overall winners of each division will be announced after all cars have finished racing.

Following the race, Scouts will be allowed to pick up their cars and take them home.
